Tracking Precious Metals & Commodities in Banktivity

Banktivity allows you to monitor commodities such as gold, silver, platinum, palladium, and oil alongside your traditional stocks and funds. By adding these assets as securities using FOREX spot symbols, Banktivity can automatically download historical and current market price quotes.

How to Add a Commodity Security

1. Open your ledger in Banktivity.
2. Navigate to Configuration > Securities
3. Click the + (Add) button to create a new security.
4. Enter the name of the commodity in the Name field (for example, Gold Spot US Dollar).
5. In the Symbol field, enter the appropriate ticker symbol including the .FOREX suffix (for example, XAUUSD.FOREX).
6. Set the Security Type to Precious Metal or Commodity, and select the appropriate currency for the security.
7. Ensure the option to automatically download quotes is enabled.
8. Click Add Security

Once created, you can record transactions (such as buy, sell, or balance adjustments) using this security within your investment accounts to track quantities (in troy ounces or barrels) and market values.

To ensure Banktivity downloads current market pricing correctly, enter the exact ticker format below:

Note: Most precious metals quote by the troy ounce, while crude oil quotes by the barrel. When recording transactions, enter the number of units/ounces as the share quantity.
