Issues with multiple prompts for MFA/2FA codes when accounts update

Posted on January 16, 2020April 6, 2021 by John Sawyer

Are you having trouble with getting prompted for too many multi-factor authentication (MFA) codes when your account updates? If so, please read on as these steps can help streamline the account connection.

Please go to File> Subscription> Direct Access and click on the text that says “Click here to view currently active banks…”

From there click on the “Delete” button to delete ALL existing listings related to the bank you are having issues with.

After deleting ALL listings related to this bank, click “Done”

Then attempt to set up downloading for your account(s) again using the following steps:

• Double-Click on the account name for the account.
• Click “Configure Connection”
• Follow on-screen prompts to set up your account.
• When you get to the screen that says “Connect using Direct Access” then press and hold the Option key on your keyboard as you click “Next”, keep holding the Option key until you are asked for the Kind of account you would like to set up. Select the proper Kind for your account, then sign in.

Repeat the above for any/all accounts with the bank you are having issues with.

This should allow all of your accounts to be set up again for Direct Access. In the future when an update occurs for your account(s) you will be prompted to enter a new code for each account, but it should only be one code per account and you should not need to enter the username and password for the account(s).

If you are still receiving too many prompts for codes while using Banktivity you could go to Banktivity> Preferences> Import and uncheck the checkbox beside “Download Bank Transactions”. This will prevent your accounts from attempting to update automatically. With this preference turned off you will be able to update your accounts anytime you like by clicking on the button that looks like an arrow in a circular pattern in the upper-left part of the Banktivity window (or by going to View> Bring Up To Date).

Banks with known issues as described above include:
Byline Bank, CIBC, Capital One, Chase, Citizens Bank, First Bank, First Midwest Bank, Navy FCU, Navy Federal, Northwest Mutual Life, PNC, TriState Capital Bank, USAA, UW CU.

Ally Bank, Byline Bank, CIBC, Capital One, Chase, Citizens Bank, First Bank, First Midwest Bank, Navy FCU, Navy Federal, Northwest Mutual Life, PNC, TriState Capital Bank, USAA, UW CU
